Safe Driving Grants for High Schools

Safe Driving Grants for High Schools
The Operation Teen Safe Driving program to be held in 2010-2011 has selected six telegraph area high schools for participation. This program is an initiation to try and decrease injuries and accidents involving the youth of Illinois.

Gary Hannig, the Illinois Transportation Secretary announced the list of the participating schools. This includes the Alton High School, Godfrey, the Marquette Catholic High School, Alton, the Civic Memorial High School, Bethalto, the Gillespie High School, and Roxana High School amongst others. The Allstate Foundation and the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Traffic Safety will hand out $2,000 to each of these schools. Throughout the program, the schools are supposed to develop and implement a peer-to-peer based program. At the end of the program, a report has to be presented. Winners would be selected from every one of the seven regions. Also, the winning school will receive the prize money to host a post prom party. The selected high schools are distributed equally in all the six regions.

Gary Hannig said, “We congratulate the selected schools for their dedication and commitment to traffic safety and look forward to the innovative campaigns students will create in the program”.

The manager of Ford Driving Skills for Life program, Jim Graham believes that teens face a large number of hazards on the road that include distractions. It is imperative to provide resources that will aid safe driving. “Ford Company Fund is committed to providing free ongoing training to not only teens, but drivers of all ages”.

For the selection process, students will have to identify the various issues that are related to traffic safety. These include seat belt use, underage driving and distracted driving. Likewise, information has to be provided by the students explaining the ways they will try to overcome the traffic safety problem and how they will implement a teen awareness program in their school and community.
