According to statistics, senior drivers are prone to receiving traffic citations for going through red lights, failing to yield to traffic signs or turning improperly. The accident rate is also more in this age group and they are most likely to get seriously hurt or succumb to the injury. However, if an adult driver has a healthy and safe driving habit from early on, they will mature into a careful senior driver. Habits are hard to die, so make sure you follow a safe driving habit. Cell phones don't cause accidents – Distracted Drivers do

With so many organizations and law makers aiming to ban the use of cell phones in cars, it is important to know that the real problem is distracted driving. It has been responsible for vehicular accidents for far longer than cell phones have been around. In 2009, car crashes involving distracted drivers killed almost 5,500 people. As per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, only 18% of these accidents were due to cell phone distractions. Around 84% were reported as fatalities due to general carelessness or inattentiveness. Of course, this includes cell phones. But, a majority of them referred to eating, talking to the other passengers, looking out of the window or looking for an item. Teen Driver Safety Week - Rules of the road

The state is celebrating National Teen Driver Safety Week from Sunday to Saturday with a view of bringing attention to the laws that govern new drivers. Also, the impact parents have by setting down limits on their teens for modeling responsible driving behavior will be taken into consideration. Recent studies have shown that parents are the number one influence on their teens' driving. The leading cause of death among the teens aged between 16-19 in Washington is motor vehicle accidents. It has caused the death of 27 teen drivers in the year 2010. 84 teens died in motor crashes through 2008-2009. Parents should keep in mind the following steps to help teens become safe drivers: Try to enforce intermediate driver licensing law. The teens should not be allowed to carry passengers younger than 20 during the first six months. During the next six months they should be allowed to carry no more than 3 passengers that are younger than 20. Teens should not be allowed to drive between 1 am

The Complete Checklist for the Coming Winters

It is that time of the year when you start thinking about winterizing your car. Bill Hume, Vice President of Hankook Tire Canada says, “With unpredictable weather conditions, Canadian winters are challenging for even the most seasoned motorists”. He believes that every driver should create a checklist in order to ensure safety. Here are a few basic things that should be done to get your car safely through the winters: Changing the oil: A thinner viscosity engine oil is required to lubricate engine parts in the colder conditions. The car's user manual can be consulted for the fluid recommendations. Winter tires: There are these special tires that have an added groove capacity. This helps in dispelling all the extra snow which is stuck to the tire. Also, these winter tires are made of a softer compound which helps in providing additional traction. Battery check: The change in temperature leads to an increase in power demand. The use of defrosters, windshield wipers and the heating sy

Officer dies in drunk driving crash

According to the reports of the Mercury newspaper, Josue Martinez died on the spot after his car crashed against a power pole on Easter Monday, last year. He was driving at more than double the speed limit. Josue Martinez, aged 22, was a resident of Launceton. Reports showed that he was not wearing a seat belt and had a blood alcohol reading of 0.205. It has been estimated that the car was moving at a speed of 128 km per hour on High Street Launceton before it hit the pole. John Gledhill, chairman of the Road Safety Advisory Council, finds it difficult to believe that something like this could happen in the taskforce. “It is highly unacceptable that anyone, regardless of who they are behaves in that manner.”, says he. He believes that Martinez's death is a reminder of the impact alcohol

The use of cell phones is not restricted to only the teens. For many adults, their cars become their offices and the cell phone is like a professional lifeline. Most Distracted Driving Accidents have nothing to do with Cell Phones

In May 2009, Lora Hunt of Morris banged into a motorcyclist, Anita Zaffke, while the former was busy painting her fingernails. This accident illustrated a fact: dangerous driving accidents go way beyond cell phone usage and texting. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, only a fraction of the 5,474 people killed and 448,000 people injured were involved in distracted driving crashes last year. Even then, more attention is payed to drivers talking or texting on their cell phones. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says only 18% of the fatalities were cell phone related.
